SightGlass Vision announced that 2 million children worldwide have now worn its DOT spectacle lenses, reaching the milestone less than a year after surpassing 1 million wearers.
First commercially introduced in 2021, DOT lenses are designed to slow myopia progression in children using Diffusion Optics Technology, an approach based on contrast management. The lenses have launched in Canada, China, Israel, Spain, and the U.K., and the company anticipates additional market introductions in 2026.
“Two million children in DOT lenses is a powerful reminder of why we do this work, and a testament to the need for this safe and effective myopia control treatment,” says Andrew Sedgwick, CEO of SightGlass Vision.
Clinical Data on DOT Lenses
SightGlass Vision, founded in 2016 as a joint venture of CooperVision and Essilor International, also highlighted recently reported findings from its CATHAY study in China. According to the company, DOT lenses slowed average myopia progression by 67%, or 0.78 D, and average axial length progression by 62%, or 0.40 mm, after two years compared with the control group among children ages 6 to 13. Among children ages 6 to 10, the company reports that the lenses prevented more than 1 D of myopia progression on average over two years.
Control the Contrast
DOT technology is based on research examining differences in contrast between artificial and natural visual environments and their relationship with eye growth. DOT lenses incorporate thousands of elements that softly scatter light before it reaches the retina to mimic more natural contrast levels.
SightGlass Vision also recently introduced its Control the Contrast professional education campaign to provide eye care professionals with additional information about the science behind these myopia control lenses.
“In my practice, DOT lenses have been one of the easiest myopia-control options for children to adapt to,” says Teddy Chow of The Chow Eye Institute in Canada. “Most kids stop noticing them within days and simply wear them as their everyday glasses.”
