IOT unveiled Light-Form Technology, its digital additive manufacturing technology for ophthalmic lenses, last month at MAFO–The Conference 2026, a global industry event for the international eyewear community. At the event, Light-Form Technology earned the Best Presentation award during its public debut.

Light-Form Technology represents a shift in prescription lens manufacturing by departing from traditional free-form surfacing methods. By utilizing a controlled volumetric photopolymerization process, the prescription lenses is built in one step using a single flash of light.

Company Reaction

IOT says this new ophthalmic lens manufacturing process results in precision, speed, cleanliness, and sustainability, simplifying production while also reducing the environmental footprint. “Light-Form enables the creation of fully customized prescription lenses in seconds—without water consumption, without plastic waste, and with up to 90% less energy use,” says Daniel Crespo, IOT’s CEO.

According to Chief Innovation Officer Jose Alonso, the key to Light-Form Technology is stabilizing a phenomenon known as frontal photopolymerization. “The beauty of Light-Form is that we build the entire lens volume in one go—no layers, no stair-stepping, no post-polishing.”

Potential Applications

IOT cited several opportunities for this lens manufacturing innovation, including

  • Decentralized, last-mile manufacturing. This enables opticians and micro-hubs to deliver same-day lenses.
  • Deployment in remote or low-resource regions. This extends access to vision care.
  • Next-generation optical applications. Potential applications include augmented reality optics and future smart-glass components.

More about IOT

IOT says the launch of Light-Form Technology represents its mission to deliver disruptive, sustainable, and high-performance solutions to the ophthalmic industry. This new technology expands its optical manufacturing portfolio.

IOT specializes in ophthalmic lens solutions, including free-form designs, photochromic technologies such as Neochromes, and manufacturing solutions. The company develops lens design software, photochromic technologies, and manufacturing solutions for partners worldwide. IOT has offices in Madrid, California, and Minneapolis and supports hundreds of worldwide partners.
