With National Sunglasses Day approaching on June 27, The Vision Council Foundation is sharing an ultraviolet (UV) rays fact sheet to help eye doctors and their staff educate patients on the importance of wearing sunglasses.
The fact sheet states that UV radiation can have both short- and long-term effects on vision and quality of life, contributing to conditions such as inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva, cataracts, pterygium, cancer in and around the eye, and macular degeneration.
Patient Education Points
The Vision Council emphasized several key points that can be passed along to patients on June 27 and throughout the year:
- Sunglasses should be worn year-round. Protection UV radiation is needed everyday, not just during sunny or warm weather.
- Sunglasses should have 100% UVA/UVB protection. This can help reduce eye damage from sun exposure while allowing people to safely enjoy their time outdoors. TVC notes that 20 minutes per day spent outdoors can reduce stress, and some UV exposure for vitamin D is beneficial to overall health.
- Children and adolescents are most at risk. Children are particularly vulnerable due to their skin and eye structure, as well as the amount of time they spend outdoors.
- Athletes see additional benefits. Along with protecting sight and preventing injuries, the right eyewear can enhance performance in sports and activities by optimizing vision clarity, depth perception, and contrast sensitivity.

The Vision Council Foundation encourages practices, brands, and consumers to celebrate National Sunglasses Day by sharing educational content and promoting UV-safe eyewear.
