In the first installment of this Sustainability Matters Practice Spotlight, Dr. Tucker details the specific eco-friendly efforts employed by Bellaire Family Eye Care, including offering environmentally conscious products, a contact lens recycling program, and other ways the practice makes sustainability a daily commitment.

Insight Media: Why are sustainability efforts a priority in your practice?

Dr. Ashley Wallace Tucker: As eye care providers, we have a responsibility to think beyond the exam room. Our decisions affect not only our patients but also the communities and environment around us.

Eye care generates a surprising amount of waste, from contact lens packaging and disposable materials to shipping supplies and everyday office operations. With a busy practice, even small changes can have a meaningful cumulative impact. For us, sustainability is about being more intentional with our resources without compromising the quality of care we provide.

IM: What products do you offer that are eco-friendly?

Dr. Tucker: One of the exciting developments in our industry is the growing availability of eyewear manufactured using recycled, bio-based, or other environmentally conscious materials. We recognize the importance of partnering with manufacturers that prioritize responsible production practices and reduced packaging.

Contact lens manufacturers are also making meaningful strides in sustainability through improvements in packaging, manufacturing processes, and recycling initiatives. We are particularly enthusiastic about opportunities to reduce contact lens waste through recycling programs that allow used lenses and blister packs to be collected and responsibly processed.

Ultimately, our priority remains recommending products that best meet our patients’ visual and ocular health needs while recognizing opportunities to make more environmentally responsible choices.

IM: Beyond offering eco-friendly products, what other efforts have you made in your practice?

Dr. Tucker: One of our most important initiatives is our contact lens recycling program. We recycle all contact lens packaging generated during in-office fittings and encourage patients to collect their used contact lenses and blister packs at home and return them to our office for recycling. This allows us to extend our sustainability efforts beyond our practice walls and make it easier for patients to participate.

We have also made a conscious effort to minimize paper consumption throughout the practice. Although we strive to operate as digitally as possible, some paper use remains unavoidable. When printing is necessary, we make it a point to print double-sided to minimize waste, and we recycle all paper used throughout the office. By incorporating electronic records, digital communication, and more efficient administrative workflows, we aim to reduce waste at the source rather than relying solely on recycling.

Energy conservation is another important component of our efforts. We ensure that computers enter sleep mode when idle and that all computers and equipment are powered down at the end of each day. These may seem like small operational decisions, but across a busy practice with multiple doctors and workstations, the cumulative impact can be significant.

Just as importantly, we have worked to make recycling part of our everyday practice culture. We encourage our entire team to recycle whenever possible and have conveniently placed recycling bins throughout the office and in our staff lunchroom. Making recycling accessible and easy helps reinforce these habits and encourages everyone to take ownership of our sustainability efforts.
