The United Opticians Association (UOA) has launched the Sightline Industry Panel, a new think tank designed to bring together leaders across the optical industry to help shape the future of opticianry. The initiative, hosted and moderated by Hilco Vision, held its inaugural meeting on March 13 at Vision Expo in Orlando.
According to UOA, the panel is intended to create a collaborative forum that will address both the professional evolution of opticianry and the patient-consumer experience.
“This is the beginning of something transformative,” said Gwen Cooper, UOA executive director. “A unified, industry-wide effort to elevate opticianry, strengthen our workforce, and ensure our profession evolves alongside the rapid advancements in vision care.”
Focus on Evolution and Independent Practices
The kickoff meeting brought together executives from various eyewear and optical technology companies. The discussion focused on the future of the industry and how opticians can play a stronger, more unified role. Early talking points centered on expectations from the UOA and the possibilities for this collaboration.
“For too long, our profession has been complacent doing things the same way,” said one participant. “Progress in optics demands that opticians evolve with it.”
The optician’s role in technology adoption emerged as another key theme. “Opticians should be at the forefront of adopting new technologies that improve precision, enhance patient experience, strengthen patient education, and elevate the value we bring to vision care,” said another participant.
The discussion also reinforced the importance of independent optician-owned practices. A panel participant noted that independent practices have historically been the backbone of the profession and that future opticians should be encouraged to pursue their own business opportunities.
Future Meetings
The Sightline Industry Panel will continue meeting throughout the year. Early observations and recommendations will be shared during a general session at the One Vision | One Voice | One UOA Conference June 25–27 in Chicago.
