The American Board of Opticianry (ABO) appointed Phernell Walker, MBA, ABOM, LDO, as chairperson of the board. Walker previously served as chair-elect and now assumes the role following years of involvement in the organization’s governance and exam development activities.

An award‑winning speaker and author of Pure Optics, now in its third edition, Walker also serves as vice president of optometric relations at VSP Eyefinity.

Leadership Background

Walker has more than 30 years of experience as a master optician and has worked across education, professional development, and industry collaboration. ABO said his service has included participation in exam development efforts and in shaping the strategic direction of the profession.

In his current role at VSP Eyefinity, Walker works to strengthen collaboration among opticians, optometrists, and ophthalmologists across the eye-care continuum.

Originally from St. Petersburg, Fla., Walker earned an MBA with honors from Marylhurst University and holds a master’s degree in ophthalmic optics, along with an associate degree in opticianry from Hillsborough College. He is also a licensed dispensing optician in Washington.
