VSP Vision and the American Optometric Association (AOA) announced a new collaboration designed to reinforce transparency and strengthen contracting practices with optometrists. The agreement establishes shared standards to simplify and clarify the process of managing plan amendments and contracts.
Streamlined Communication and Advanced Notice
Under the new commitment, VSP will provide doctors with clearer comparison tools when updating agreements. Each amendment will include a cover letter summarizing all changes since the previous version, making it easier for providers to evaluate revisions.
Additionally, VSP agreed to offer a minimum 90-day notification period before any contract amendments take effect. Doctors will have access to a dedicated phone number and email address for inquiries as well, with the goal of responding to and addressing questions within 30 business days when possible.
Leadership Reaction to the Agreement
“We’re proud to partner with the AOA on a matter we know is important to the profession,” said VSP Vision Board Chair Matt Wickham, OD. “While VSP already meets many of the conditions of the contracting commitment, we are always looking for ways to further strengthen the process.”
VSP Vision President and CEO Michael Guyette added that the collaboration underscores a mutual interest in continued progress and support, stating that both organizations “look forward to finding additional areas of common ground.”
AOA President Jacquie Bowen, OD, commended VSP’s approach. “Doctors deserve clarity and fairness in their contracting relationships,” she said. “VSP’s contracting transparency commitment is a notable example of industry leadership and the good faith needed to continue a frank, open and solutions-focused dialog.”
Expanded Practice Support in 2026
In addition to the agreement, VSP Vision announced that it is expanding its support for private practices through new Premier Edge and PECAA Max benefits starting January 2026. New resources will include:
- A redesigned UUniversity online training platform
- Dedicated OD recruitment support
- Special pricing on select PECAA programs and services
