The National Academy of Opticianry (NAO) and the United Opticians Association (UOA) have officially authorized the beginning of a formal merger or asset-transfer process.
NAO Fellow Members and the UOA Board of Directors each voted to move forward with the next phase of due diligence and planning. The announcement follows a Letter of Intent approved by both organizations in April.
Both organizations emphasized that current operations, educational offerings, member services, and the OCPP will continue without interruption throughout the evaluation process.
About the Organizations
The potential alignment would combine two organizations with longstanding histories in advancing the opticianry profession and education. Founded in 1963, NAO offers opticianry education and training programs, including the Ophthalmic Career Progression Program (OCPP), certification and licensing exam preparation, and continuing education.
UOA formed in 2024 through the merger of the Opticians Association of America and the National Federation of Opticianry Schools and is a national advocate for opticianry. Its recent focus has centered around standardized education, certification, and coordinated advocacy.
Due Diligence Process
As the due diligence process continues, the Joint Steering Committee will evaluate:
- Financial and legal obligations
- Programmatic integration opportunities
- Operational and staffing considerations
- Member services and educational continuity
“This vote allows the process to continue responsibly and transparently,” said Gwen Cooper, executive director of UOA and chair of the Joint Steering Committee. “Both organizations remain committed to a thorough review that ensures any final decision is in the best interest of the profession, the members we serve, the students of the OCPP and the long-term sustainability of opticianry education and advocacy.”
“NAO and UOA share a long-standing commitment to strengthening the opticianry profession,” said Diane Drake, NAO board president. “This process is designed to ensure that our future alignment is thoughtful, well-planned, and grounded in the best interests of our members and the communities we serve.”
The organizations say they will share additional updates during this continued evaluation process.
