As we move into a new year and a fresh start, skilling up with mindful planning can benefit your practice, career, business, and life. Here, we share two steps and three tools that will help you stay focused on what deserves your energy, not merely what demands attention.

Step 1: Bring Awareness Before Action

Mindful planning starts with awareness of our values and determining what matters most right now. Before creating a schedule or setting a goal, it is critical to assess where we are mentally, emotionally, and energetically.

Additionally, it’s important to reflect on the season we’re in—whether it’s growth, maintenance, transition, or restoration—which may differ across various aspects of our lives. And perhaps most importantly, it is essential to consider what we may need to let go of to move forward. With this awareness, we create the foundation for purposeful and sustainable action.

As we move into a new year and a fresh start, skilling up with mindful planning can benefit your practice, career, business, and life.

Step 2: Select What Deserves Your Energy

Not all priorities are created equal. Many responsibilities that we inherit, often out of habit, outdated expectations, or external pressure, do not align with our real priorities. Mindful prioritization allows us to filter our commitments through the lens of clarity, purpose, and alignment.

Tool 1: The “3 Most Important Things” Framework

This tool streamlines planning by narrowing focus to the three actions that would make the most impact today. This helps us reduce overwhelm and move forward with intention rather than reactivity.

Pro Tip: Write down your “3 Most Important Things” each day and check them off as you complete them.

If a task takes less than 5 minutes, complete it since small wins build momentum.

Tool 2. The Clarity Filter

This tool helps you evaluate tasks through the lens of your values, goals, and purpose. When something doesn’t align, it becomes clear that it may not need attention right now, or at all.

Pro Tip: Regularly revisit your values, goals, and purpose to guide your choices.

Tool 3. The Impact-Versus-Effort Matrix

This tool helps you rank tasks by comparing the impact they create with the effort they require. High-impact, low-effort actions become the priority, while low-impact tasks can be delegated, delayed, or eliminated.
