Alcon has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for BRYTLY (apraclonidine ophthalmic solution, 0.125%) Redness Reliever Eye Drops. The over-the-counter (OTC) drops are designed to reduce visible eye redness within one minute, with results lasting up to 12 hours according to the company.

The approval expands Alcon’s consumer eye care portfolio with a product intended to help achieve whiter, brighter-looking eyes. BRYTLY is expected to become available at major retailers nationwide and online in the coming months.

“When patients ask about eye whiteners, they want a product they can trust to work effectively and fit into their day,” says Selina McGee, OD, founder and chief optometrist of Bespoke Vision in Edmond, Okla. “BRYTLY gives eye care professionals a clinically proven option to recommend, with demonstrated safety and efficacy and long-lasting redness reduction from a single drop.”

Effectiveness and Duration

According to Alcon, a single drop of BRYTLY significantly reduces eye redness, with results lasting up to 12 hours. Alcon reports that BRYTLY contains no bleaches or dyes and has demonstrated safety and efficacy when used as directed. Company-cited studies also found a low risk of rebound redness and tachyphylaxis.

Jonathan Balch, general manager, Ocular Health & Pharma, Alcon, says this FDA approval marks an exciting milestone for the company. “With BRYTLY, we’re bringing Alcon’s trusted eye care expertise to consumers who want to reduce eye redness and want their eyes to look whiter and brighter.

A New Option for Redness

Balch added that by delivering long-lasting redness reduction, BRYTLY can help consumers feel confident in how their eyes look throughout the day. Studies show that visible eye redness can influence perceptions of healthiness and attractiveness.

Given this research, Alcon is positioning BRYTLY as an OTC option for consumers who are increasingly interested in products that combine eye care with appearance and wellness benefits.
